Luis Cordero has practiced immigration law exclusively since his admission to the bar. In 2006, after many years as a partner in a multinational firm, he established his own firm, Cordero & Associates, offering services in the area of immigration, nationality and consular law. The firm deals with all aspects of business immigration and executive transfer, with an emphasis on serving professionals, entrepreneurs, investors, entertainers and artists.
Mr. Cordero has personally represented hundreds of clients at U.S. Embassies and Consulates abroad, as well as before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (formerly the Immigration and Naturalization Service), the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Department of Labor. He has litigation experience in deportation, exclusion and removal hearings as well as in employer sanctions cases, representing clients before the Immigration Courts and Administrative Law Judges. Additional areas of experience include real estate, labor/employment, tax and corporate law, as well as criminal and family matters.
Mr. Cordero is a member of The Florida Bar, New York Bar and District of Columbia Bar. He is admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court; U.S. District Courts: Southern District of Florida, Southern District of New York, Eastern District of New York and District of Columbia; and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. He has served on The Florida Bar’s Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee. He also belongs to the Dade County Bar Association, Inter-American Bar Association, American Bar Association and Cuban-American Bar Associatation. He was named among South Florida’s Top Lawyers by the South Florida Legal Guide and is listed in Who’s Who Legal: Florida. He has also been rated by Super Lawyers for over 10 years.
Based on confidential opinions of members of the Bar and Judiciary, Mr. Cordero has received a rating of “AV Preeminent” from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest possible rating for both legal ability as well as adherence to professional standards of conduct and ethics, reliability, diligence and other criteria relevant to the discharge of professional responsibilities. He is ranked in Band 1, the highest available, in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, an annual guide that assesses lawyers based on confidential, in-depth interviews with peers and clients. He is also profiled in Super Lawyers, having been nominated by other lawyers via a state survey and then vetted by a research team that assesses evidence of peer recognition and professional achievement.
A former president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), South Florida Chapter, Mr. Cordero currently serves on the chapter’s board of directors. He also speaks at national AILA events and writes for AILA publications. He is co-author of “Immigration Act of 1990,” International Law Quarterly, June 1990, and “Leyes Migratorias Estadounidenses,” presented at the Novena Conferencia de Abogados de Las Americas, Summit of the Americas, 1994, Miami, Florida. He authored “The New and Not So Improved H-1B Visa Category,” presented at Changing Parameters: Responsive Strategies under the New Immigration Order, St. Petersburg, Florida, 1998.
He contributed to AILA’s Eastern Region Directory of INS Offices, Second and Third Editions, and recently served as an AILA liaison to the Texas Service Center of the INS, which adjudicates most petitions (including employment-based petitions) for the 13 southeastern states. Mr. Cordero has been included in the American Immigration Lawyers Association’s Honor Roll since 1992.
Mr. Cordero graduated from Rutgers University with a bachelor of science degree in accounting (Omicron Delta Epsilon) and earned his law degree from the University of Miami. He is fluent in English and Spanish and has a working knowledge of Portuguese.
